"By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and Third by experience, which is the bitterest." Confucius
Success with Applied Wisdom
We have already mentioned a lot about the brain and the mind in this website. However, we haven't emphasized the importance of philosophy, the "love of wisdom," which accounts for values, perspectives, and decision-making. This may not seem important until a teenager is stumped by their philosophical college application essay questions.
Many adults complain that teenagers and young adults lack wisdom. While that is true, many adults also lack wisdom these days about relationships, careers, academics, and practical success. However, all of these were core issues for both Confucian philosophers in The East, Greco-Roman philosophers in The West, and Rational Muslims in the medieval world between the other two civilizations. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Cicero would have agreed with the quote above, and Muslim scholars like Alpharabius (Al-Farabi), Avicenna (Abu Ali Sina), and Averroes (Ibn Rushd) who studied Aristotle in particular would have agreed as well. That said, many of these Western and Middle Eastern thinkers laid the foundations of both Critical Thinking and the Scientific Method.
For thousands of years, many schools of The West taught about practical success using texts like Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics and Eudemian Ethics as well as the various works of the great Roman orator and lawyer, Marcus Tullius Cicero. For thousands of years, the tutors and schools of The East taught the ideas of Confucius as a foundation for the mind. There are great gems and systematic concepts within those methods that too many people neglect these days as they rely upon technology, the Common Core, and ever-changing teaching methods (e.g. student team learning, team grades, etc.).
The ECRIT difference
Like other academic coaches, we can provide important discussion about goals, tasks, motivation, evaluations, paths, etc. Like other application consultants, we can provide crucial help regarding admissions essays, interviews, portfolios, etc.
But whether you seek help for academic improvement through Academic Coaching or help with admissions applications through Academic Admissions Consulting, ECRIT will provide you with beneficial assistance that uniquely includesanunderstanding and application of technology, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy whenever and wherever appropriate. Our coaching and consulting may be used for an individual student, for a group of students, a family, or a school. In fact, there are many aspects to student success that require certain types of team effort, and we incorporate this fact into our perspectives.
That said, we have a network of tutors and mentors who can also be a tremendous help.
"Learning is to a man as the leaves and branches are to a tree, and it can be said that he should not be without it. Learning is not only reading books, however, but is rather something that we study to integrate with our own way of life... a man can divide his mind into three parts: he should throw out those thoughts that are evil, take up those ideas that are good, and become intimate with his own wisdom… I would honor and call wise the man who penetrates this principle, though he lacks knowledge of a single Chinese character."
